The Difference Between Discrete Trial Training and Natural Environment Teaching

If you’re looking into how children with autism learn new skills, you’ve probably come across two popular methods: Discrete Trial Training (DTT) and Natural Environment Teaching (NET).

While both are part of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) and are effective, they approach learning in very different ways. Let’s take a closer look at how these two techniques work and how they can benefit your child.

What is Discrete Trial Training?

DTT is a very structured way of teaching. In DTT, a therapist presents clear instructions, waits for the child’s response, and then gives immediate feedback. This might include a reward for a correct answer or gentle guidance when the answer is wrong.

The goal is to break down complex tasks into small, manageable steps, which makes it easier for children to master one skill at a time. Whether it’s learning to communicate or develop social behaviors, DTT offers a solid foundation through repetition and consistency.

What is Natural Environment Teaching?

NET takes a more flexible and relaxed approach. Instead of sitting down for structured lessons, learning happens naturally in real-life situations. This could be at home, school, or even while playing. The beauty of NET is that it takes advantage of the child’s interests and the environment around them to teach skills.

For example, if a child is playing with toys, the therapist might use that moment to teach communication, problem-solving, or social skills. NET helps children apply what they’ve learned to everyday activities and environments, making it more natural and relevant.

Key Differences Between DTT and NET

  • Structure vs. Flexibility: DTT is very structured and involves repetitive, focused sessions, while NET is more relaxed and uses real-world scenarios to teach.
  • Setting: DTT usually happens in a controlled setting, like a therapy room, while NET happens in natural, everyday environments where children are comfortable.
  • Skills Taught: DTT is great for teaching specific, targeted skills step by step. NET focuses on helping children generalize and use these skills in real-life situations.

Both DTT and NET are great for helping autistic children learn new things, but they work best in different situations. DTT excels at teaching specific, individual skills, while NET is perfect for helping kids use those skills in the world around them.

FAQs

What does Discrete Trial Training teach?

DTT teaches specific skills, like communication and social behavior, by breaking tasks down into smaller, manageable steps and using repetition to reinforce learning.

How does Natural Environment Teaching help children?

NET helps children apply their skills in real-life situations. By using their environment and interests, children learn to use their new skills in everyday activities.

Can both DTT and NET be used together?

Yes! Many ABA programs combine DTT and NET to provide a well-rounded approach—DTT focuses on skill mastery, and NET helps children use those skills in real-world settings.
